Sony Laptops

One of the hottest new designs in the laptop industry is flexible OLED technology which is being used in Sony laptops future line of laptop entitled ‘Contrast'.

Technology is advancing at a breakneck pace making it almost impossible to keep up on the latest designs and ideas. Often an incredibly revolutionary product just seems to pop into the collective consciousness and all of a sudden everyone has one and it begins to change the way life is lived. It's hard to remember what life was like before cell phones and the internet, just like it is hard for our grandparents to remember what it was like without electricity.

Computers are part of many people's daily lives. If you are reading this you obviously have one. They are widely used for both work and play and are capable of truly amazing feats whether they be complex mathematical calculations or rendering an animation. They have also come along way in terms of size and portability. The first computers took up entire rooms and had less computing power than a graphing calculator. If used correctly that graphing calculator could be used to go to the moon. The Apollo missions worked with less, imagine what is possible now.

While computing and processing technology has rapidly increased, screens have yet to go through a significant revolution, until now. One of the hottest new designs unveiled at CES 2010 was Sony laptops new line of flexible OLED screen computer called ‘Contrast'. They are completely flexible touch screens that light up brighter than the now favored LCD screens and they consume much less power. These are truly beautiful to behold on and off. When powered off they resemble a glossy slab of resin. Pick it up and it's as flexible as paper. While it's not a good idea to fold it, it can be easily rolled into a tube. With a special protective case it stands like a typical laptop with a touch screen keyboard that extends right into the screen, oh wait, that is part of the screen.

Although the Contrast series isn't slated for production for 10 years expect to see more and more flex OLED screens popping up on everything from watches to photo albums to televisions. In case you couldn't figure it out, OLED stands for organic light emitting diode and can be much thinner as well as flexible without damaging the diodes. Instead of blocking light the way an LCD does, OLEDs actually emit light making them brighter. This characteristic actually makes them consume less power as well. There are number of ways to manufacture them, but the most promising and inexpensive method involves printing the diodes onto a film much like a household ink-jet printer works today.

If thin flexible screens aren't your thing check out Sony laptops concept design called the VAIO Zoom. It is a stiff glass encasement that is completely clear until it is turned on and bursts into color and 3D holographic life. The keyboard and even the mouse buttons are completely holographic which produces the most futuristic effect seen yet in portable computing.
