Mini
laptops are taking the computer industry by storm and it’s not
because of their superior power (they don’t have it) or their
large screens (they’re actually very small) but because of their
affordability, portability and ease of use. They have a number of advantages,
as well as disadvantages to a regular sized laptop but are also remarkably
more powerful than the best mobile phone or PDA.
The advantage of having a miniature, portable yet still powerful laptop
is largely its size. They are small enough to easily fit into a handbag,
small backpack, and even a purse or jacket pocket much like a mobile
phone or digital assistant. Unlike a mobile phone however, these mini
notebooks have a number of wireless options including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
so they can actually be used hands free as a mobile phone, video phone,
or for web based communication. E-mail and internet browsing is easy
and fast and there are a number of USB ports for attaching external
hardware, cameras and mass storage devices. They put phones to shame
with their better storage space, more powerful processors, and availability
of programs.
Don’t like the small screen? Just connect it to a regular computer
screen or a HDTV. Add a wireless keyboard and it is easy to surf from
the comfort of the living room couch. Grab it, throw it in a bag and
continue surfing the entire subway ride to work before syncing it with
the computer there. These devices are made to go anywhere and often
have a number of protective features such as shock absorbent cases,
water and coffee proof keyboards, and easy to clean finishes and screens.
Driving somewhere? The Sony VIAO P series has built in GPS to find any
location almost anywhere in the world, although it is not one of the
more affordable models which is often the appeal of these minis.
Mini laptops run on regular operating system programs such as Windows,
Linux, and even Mac so they can easily be upgraded to support almost
any program. With up to 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive they can easily
be the only computer that is ever used and many have blazing fast micro
processors. Often called netbooks because of their ease of browsing
in almost any environment these computers are taking the industry by
storm. They require less power, are incredibly light, and are fashionable
as well coming in a wide variety of colors and designs. Some of them
look more like a nice leather bound book than a computer.
Some of the hottest designs are going away from the traditional clam
shell type of laptop preferring instead a touch screen notebook style
and experimenting with flexible OLED screen materials that are more
like holding a piece of paper than a regular laptop computer. Holographic
displays and interaction are becoming a reality that puts sci-fi to
shame and nano-technology is rapidly making electronic devices so small
they may become implantable. Then the World Wide Web really would be
at your fingertips.
