Automobile
laptop stands are designed to allow secure, reliable use of the laptop
while the car is safely parked. For those who are on the road often,
whether for business or travel, these devices can be invaluable. Possible
uses of automobile laptop stands include the ability to look up directions
or access your laptop GPS from the car, make service calls, and more.
These stands are not meant to be used while driving. To
do so poses an immense safety hazard. Use automobile laptop stands only
when parked.
There are several varieties of automobile laptop stands,
meant to fit the specifications of nearly all kinds of vehicles. Most
stands are designed to be height-adjustable, and allow the computer
to lock into place with sliding rubber arms. A swing arm allows the
laptop to swing around and be easily accessed.
One of the more popular styles is actually more of a mount,
which easily snaps into place on the steering wheel, and is easy to
store in the backseat or trunk when it is not being used. There are
also tripod-style automobile laptop stands. These can be installed using
the specifications already present in the vehicle—in most cases,
the bolts on the passenger door—and require no modifications to
the vehicle itself.
However, because these stands need to fit the specifications
for different kinds of vehicles, there is no universal model. Therefore,
you will of course want to check beforehand to make sure that the design
you choose fits in with your particular vehicle.
If you are able to find a design that meets your vehicle’s
specifications, these are easy to install and require no drilling. However,
if you can’t find one of these, universal car mounts are available.
In general this design mirrors the other, with a different installation
procedure. These stands require that a base be bolted to the flat section
of a vehicle’s floor. On the base is an adjustable stand, which
supports the swing arm and tray described above.
Other people choose to use a regular portable laptop stand
in their car. Since these are very portable, this might be a useful
way to go in a pinch, especially if you have a spacious vehicle. However,
it can also be more awkward to type on a laptop that is resting on one
of these stands, no matter how spacious your vehicle. You will also
need to make sure that your laptop is safely secured so there isn’t
a chance of it falling or becoming damaged.
One of the other varieties of mobile laptop stands is
the mobile desk. These install in the vehicle similar to the other automobile
stands; however, they come with more functions. Typically they involve
slide-out compartments which can store paperwork, or computer accessories
such as a camera or mouse. Of course, the larger these are, the more
of the passenger seat they occupy.
If passenger space is going to be an issue, you will perhaps want a
steering wheel mount. If you are traveling alone, it should not be a
concern.
Other accessories that might be useful with laptop automobile
stands are power converters which allow you to plug your laptop into
the cigarette lighter when you are low on power.
There are a number of different kinds of automobile laptop
stands available meant to meet a number of different uses and vehicles.
Which one is best for you will depend on what kind of drive, how often
you will need to use your laptop inside the vehicle, and in what capacity.
