Although it's not the same age old question of republican or democrat, white or wheat, paper or plastic and apples or oranges. Apple or PC is one of those debates that inflame both sides of the spectrum into hurling insults at each other. It is a debate that constantly rages although the success of both Apple and Microsoft has been about integration and compatibility. If either of those companies started making file formats that only worked exclusively on a Mac or PC they would quickly perish. Interconnectivity allows users to choose which ever interface they desire while still being able to work across platforms.
The first thing most people will notice when comparing Apple laptops to pc laptops is price. The cheapest MacBook is going to run $1000 while a comparable model PC will be about $400 cheaper. We are talking about hardware here, one advantage that an Apple has is that it comes pre-loaded with lots of great programs in a user friendly environment that is complex yet intuitive. Within moments anyone can be playing their favorite game, recording and editing music, or making a movie. For creative and design based applications Apple computers cannot be beat.
When taking into account that a PC laptop barely comes with a spread sheet and word processing program, as well as Vista operating system that has a hackable back door (intended for enforcing registration, updates, and preventing software piracy) the average user is going to have to purchase a number of software programs including a good anti-virus. This easily brings the cost up to an Apple and can even go beyond it for similar programs that come bundled with their competition.
Apple laptops have PCs left in the dust as far as anti-virus and robust programming are concerned. Anything operating windows needs a highly advanced anti-virus that has to be constantly updated. Maybe it's Bill Gates himself trying to make a little bit of lunch money hacking his own OS but more likely it's the stability and simplicity of Macs Unix based programming that is almost immune to infection.
Okay, back to the interconnectivity issues. Apple computers are now almost all solely run off the Intel Core Duo processor which expanded their compatibility with Windows operating systems. A Mac can run windows and its own OS at the same time, independently, or just windows all the time. Other operating systems such as Linux work well on Apples too. Just beware, running windows opens up the computer to virus' making it much more vulnerable to attack and there is probably a better program made for Apples anyway.
Don't even think of going the other way, a PC will not run any Mac OS without completely retrofitting the hardware or slowing the computer down enormously. Unless the goal is simple web searching coupled with word and spreadsheet processing go with the PC. For a long lasting, robust, fast, full of application computer go with the Apple laptop even though it is more expensive.
